Sour-Bro: A Dry Hopped Kettle Sour
To showcase the versatility and unique aromatic capabilities of many popular hop varieties, our Technical Solutions team has set out to experiment with a few less common techniques and beer styles. New proprietary varieties such as Loral® and Sabro™ have a lot of potential, outside of IPAs and Pale Ales. Sour-Bro, which is a dry hopped kettle sour featuring Sabro™ Cryo Hops® Pellets that we made in our pilot brewery, is a great example of this.
“Most likely due to the low pH, the Sabro™ expressed itself in different ways when used in this beer style,” says Tommy Yancone, Technical Brewer at YCH. “Unlike when it’s used in an IPA, there were no coconut or dill aromatics. Instead Sabro’s tropical side exploded from the glass, producing a ton of mango, passionfruit, lime, and peach aromas. While this is obviously a hoppy beer, it’s a good entry point for those new to sours, or who usually turn away from hoppy beers. We’re excited to experiment with other unique varieties to see their expression in sour beers.”
